Description
I've noticed that Tiktoken is really slow for strings of repeated characters like "a" * 100_000. Interestingly, when you add spaces, like "a " * 50_000, the performance is orders of magnitude better:
Is this a bug or a fundamental property of BPE?
My Tiktoken version is 0.5.0.

Research direction
No file or test is named. Start by reproducing the reported comparison between "a" * 100000 and "a " * 50000 on tiktoken 0.5.0, then trace the tokenizer entry point and relevant BPE processing. Done means the repeated-character case has a justified fix or explanation, with tokenization results preserved and performance measured.
