Description

What version of the Codex App are you using?

Windows Store package OpenAI.Codex_26.915.4065.0_x64

What platform is your computer?

Windows x64, OS build 26100

What issue are you seeing?

In the ChatGPT desktop app, the live Voice Chat entry point is missing when creating a new chat inside a ChatGPT Project.

The project composer clearly shows that the new chat will be created inside the selected project. However, the composer exposes only the microphone icon for voice dictation. There is no control to start a live Voice Chat.

The same account and the same desktop app can start a live Voice Chat from the projectless/global entry point, so Voice availability, microphone permission, and the account entitlement are working. The failure is isolated to the project-scoped new-chat composer.

This workflow previously allowed starting Voice from within a project. I could not find a documented removal of the capability. Current OpenAI documentation still describes Voice as available in Chat, Work, and Codex, and Projects as the place to start new chats with shared project context.

Steps to reproduce
  1. Open the ChatGPT desktop app on Windows.
  2. Select an existing ChatGPT Project in the sidebar.
  3. Open the new-chat composer for that project.
  4. Confirm that the composer indicates the selected project as the destination.
  5. Inspect the composer controls.
Actual behavior

Only the microphone/dictation control is present. The live Voice Chat start control is absent.

Starting a new projectless Voice Chat elsewhere in the same app works.

Expected behavior

A new chat created inside a ChatGPT Project should provide the same live Voice Chat entry point as a new projectless chat, while preserving the selected project's context.

If Voice inside Projects is intentionally unavailable, the UI and documentation should state that limitation clearly instead of silently removing the entry point.

Additional information
  • Reproduced on September 20, 2026.
  • A screenshot confirms the project-scoped composer and the missing Voice Chat control. It is not attached publicly because the surrounding sidebar contains private project names; a sanitized crop can be provided if needed.
  • This appears distinct from reports about adding Voice to an already-existing text task. The missing control occurs before the first message, in a brand-new chat inside a project.

Research direction

Start by reproducing the Windows project-scoped new-chat composer and compare it with the projectless composer, using the supplied reproduction steps. Done means the live Voice Chat entry point is available in a new project chat, or the limitation is clearly reflected in the UI and documentation.
