Luna Reserve rollout is missing from What's New / changelog, so eligible Pro users discover it only after quota exhaustion

Summary

Luna Reserve is an included fallback for selected personal ChatGPT Plus and Pro accounts, but I could not find any rollout announcement for it in the normal places a paying Codex user would reasonably monitor.

I am a ChatGPT Pro user. I only discovered Luna Reserve today, September 17, 2026, after exhausting my regular Codex/Astra allowance. Codex automatically switched the task to Luna Reserve and showed the Luna/moon Reserve indicator.

Until that happened, I did not know this additional included usage existed. When I previously exhausted Codex usage, I moved work to other platforms and spent additional time and money there because I believed my usable OpenAI allowance was finished. Had the included Reserve fallback been clearly announced and visible before exhaustion, that would have materially changed those decisions.

This is a discoverability/documentation issue, not a request for unlimited usage or a complaint that Reserve exists.

That article explains that Luna Reserve:

• is available to selected personal Plus and Pro accounts;

However, as of September 17, 2026, searching the current official announcement/history surfaces for the exact phrase "Luna Reserve" returns no entry on:

The dedicated Help Center article is useful once a user already knows the feature name, but it is not an effective rollout announcement for users who do not know the feature exists.

Public rollout evidence

The feature was already reaching users in late August:

• #40744 was filed August 26, 2026 and describes the then-new Luna Reserve fallback in Codex App Goals.
• #40939, also filed August 26, 2026, reports the Codex App showing Luna Reserve: 100% remaining after the regular five-hour allowance was exhausted.
• #41224, filed August 28, is especially illustrative: its author says they could not find official documentation establishing that a first-party lower-cost fallback was provided after Codex subscription exhaustion.

• Date observed: September 17, 2026
• Prior model/allowance in use: GPT-6 Astra / regular Codex allowance
• Trigger: regular allowance exhausted
• Result: Codex automatically exposed/switched to Luna Reserve and displayed the Reserve/moon indicator

Expected behavior

For a feature that changes the effective amount of usable service included with a paid plan, eligible users should not have to accidentally exhaust their primary allowance to learn that it exists.

Please consider:

1. Add a dated Luna Reserve rollout entry to the ChatGPT/Codex changelog and/or What's New / Release Notes, including that it is a selected-account experiment if availability is not universal.
2. Show eligible accounts' Luna Reserve entitlement in Settings → Usage before the regular allowance reaches zero, with the separate Reserve amount/reset information where available.
3. Explain before exhaustion that the account may continue on Luna after regular usage is exhausted, and identify material model/tool capability differences.
4. When an account is newly added to the Reserve rollout, show a one-time product notification rather than waiting until the user hits the limit.
5. Keep the dedicated Help Center article, but link to it from the announcement and usage surfaces.

Why this matters

Usage entitlements affect purchasing and workflow decisions. A paid user who believes Codex will completely stop at the primary limit may buy credits, move work, subscribe to another service, or spend time rebuilding a workflow elsewhere.

In my case, the lack of advance discoverability caused exactly that: I spent time and money using other platforms because I did not know my Pro account could continue with an included Luna Reserve allowance. I only learned about it when Codex automatically switched to Reserve today.

Even if Luna Reserve remains experimental and account-specific, clearly announcing the experiment and exposing an eligible account's entitlement before exhaustion would let users make informed decisions.

Done means the rollout is announced on an official history surface and eligible users can learn about their Reserve entitlement before exhausting regular usage.
