Summary

The ChatGPT desktop app cannot connect to the installed Chrome extension, and Computer Use cannot capture application windows on macOS 27.

Environment

  • macOS: 27.0, build 26A428
  • Hardware: Apple Silicon
  • ChatGPT desktop: 26.911.61220, build 9647
  • Codex Computer Use: 26.913.1001068
  • Google Chrome: 152.0.7977.84
  • Chrome extension ID: hehggadaopoacecdllhhajmbjkdcmajg

Steps to reproduce

  1. Install the ChatGPT desktop app and Computer Use plugin.
  2. Install and enable the ChatGPT Chrome extension.
  3. Grant Screen Recording and Accessibility permissions to Codex Computer Use.
  4. Restart Chrome and the ChatGPT desktop app.
  5. Attempt to access Chrome through Computer Use or an @Chrome mention.

Actual behavior

  • Chrome does not appear as a connected browser.
  • Only the Codex in-app browser appears.
  • The extension sometimes appears as installed and sometimes as not installed.
  • Computer Use fails with:
Error Domain=com.apple.ScreenCaptureKit.SCStreamErrorDomain
Code=-3811
"Audio/video capture failed; unable to start stream"

The ChatGPT desktop logs repeatedly contain:

Chromium extension detection failed
installedPluginStatus=missing
isExtensionInstalled=null
chromeExtensionSyncAction=skip_unknown

Expected behavior

Chrome should display “Manage” under Settings > Computer Use, and ChatGPT should be able to read and control the active Chrome tab.

Troubleshooting already attempted

  • Reinstalled the ChatGPT desktop app
  • Reinstalled the Computer Use plugin
  • Reinstalled the Chrome extension
  • Removed the older ChatGPT Classic app
  • Reset Screen Recording and Accessibility permissions
  • Granted both permissions again
  • Fully restarted ChatGPT and Chrome
  • Restarted the Mac
  • Confirmed that the extension exists in the active Chrome profile

The issue still occurs after all these steps.

Research direction

Start by reproducing the failure with macOS 27, the listed ChatGPT desktop and Computer Use versions, Chrome, and the required permissions. Inspect the desktop logs for extension detection failures and the SCStreamErrorDomain -3811 capture error; done means Chrome appears under Computer Use and the active tab can be read and controlled.
