Description
What variant of Codex are you using?
Codex desktop app on macOS.
What feature would you like to see?
Please add a discoverable, configurable keyboard shortcut that immediately hides the desktop pet.
Quick dismissal should take a single key combination. Opening the command menu and searching for “Hide pet,” typing /pet, or using the pet's context menu adds friction when I just want to tuck it away and continue working.
Requested behavior:
- Expose Hide pet as an action in Settings > Keyboard shortcuts.
- Pressing its assigned shortcut immediately hides the pet, without opening a menu, requiring text entry, or focusing the main app.
- Allow the shortcut to be changed or disabled.
- Make the shortcut discoverable alongside the Hide pet menu action and in the pet documentation.
A configurable Toggle pet shortcut would also meet this need if pressing it while the pet is visible reliably hides it.
Additional information
The current Pets documentation describes ways to hide the pet and a shortcut to show/focus its controls, but says repeating the show shortcut keeps those controls open. A direct dismissal shortcut would make the keyboard workflow much faster.
Related reports found during search:
- https://github.com/openai/codex/issues/44775 — a custom Toggle Pet shortcut does not respond on a reported macOS build.
- https://github.com/openai/codex/issues/42756 — the displayed Toggle Pet shortcut does not work on a reported Windows build.
Those are reports from other users, not failures reproduced here. This request is for a clearly supported, discoverable one-step dismissal action. If an existing Toggle Pet binding is intended to provide this, please make that behavior and configuration clear in the UI and documentation.

Research direction
Start by reviewing the existing Hide pet and Toggle pet actions in Settings > Keyboard shortcuts, the pet menu action, and the linked Pets documentation. Trace how the current show/focus shortcut is exposed and verify the behavior on macOS. Done means a configurable or disabled one-step hide/toggle action is discoverable in settings, menus, and documentation without focusing the main app.
