What issue are you seeing?

I am seeing a Codex CLI subagent result-collection failure.

Codex CLI version: 0.154.0
Environment: Ubuntu on WSL2
Repository location: ~/workspace/household-tool
Authentication: ChatGPT Plus

Prompt used:

Spawn exactly one explorer subagent.

Task: list the top-level project folders only. Do not write or modify anything.
Wait for its result. If it fails, report the exact failure; do not inspect the
files in the main thread.

Observed transcript:

After that, the main thread itself listed the project folders.

Expected behavior:

After /root/explorer completes, the main thread should collect and return the
subagent’s result instead of reporting “No agents completed yet” and doing the
work itself.

Configuration checks:

• No [agents] enabled = false setting exists in ~/.codex/config.toml.
• No global custom explorer agent exists; ~/.codex/agents/ does not exist.
• No project custom explorer agent exists; ~/workspace/household-tool/.codex/agents/ does not exist.
• I performed a fresh reinstall using the official Linux installer and the issue still occurs.

Additional observation:

The explorer subagent is shown as completed, but I cannot access or retrieve its
final summary/result through /agent.

What steps can reproduce the bug?

What is the expected behavior?

After the explorer subagent completes, Codex’s main thread should receive and
display that subagent’s result in its final response.

For this reproduction, the main thread should return only the explorer
subagent’s list of top-level project folders, or a concise summary of that
result.

It should not report “No agents completed yet” after showing that the explorer
agent completed, and it should not redo the directory listing itself.

• Codex CLI was fully reinstalled with the official Linux installer before the
  final reproduction test.
• Version after reinstall: codex-cli 0.154.0.
• I am using Ubuntu on WSL2, with tmux.
• The repository is under ~/workspace, not /mnt/c.
• Subagents are not disabled in configuration.
• There are no global or project custom-agent files, including no custom
  explorer.toml override.
• /agent indicates the explorer completed, but its final result cannot be
  accessed/retrieved from the main session.
• I can provide the relevant session transcript path from ~/.codex/sessions if
  needed, with sensitive content removed.

No code change is required to reproduce this.

Steps:

1. Open Codex CLI in any local repository.

2. Start a new session.

3. Enter this prompt exactly:

   Spawn exactly one explorer subagent.

   Task: list the top-level project folders only. Do not write or modify anything.
