Description

What version of the Codex App are you using (From “About Codex” dialog)?

26.908.40824

What subscription do you have?

ChatGPT Plus

What platform is your computer?

Windows x64

What issue are you seeing?

In the redesigned ChatGPT Windows app, there is no option to start a new regular ChatGPT chat directly from inside a Project.

Chats can still be created outside the Project and then moved into it afterwards, but there is no visible New chat button/icon inside the Project itself.

This works correctly in:

  • the ChatGPT web app;
  • the ChatGPT Classic Windows app.

I also checked the app settings. Default to standalone chat ("Start new chats outside of any project") is disabled. That setting is shown under Popup Window, so I cannot confirm whether it is intended to affect the main app window, but the current behavior does not appear to be caused by opting into standalone chats.

This issue has been present for several app versions, since the redesigned Windows app replaced ChatGPT Classic.

Possibly related: #34300 reports a similar inability to start ordinary ChatGPT chats inside Projects on macOS, but this report concerns the redesigned Windows app.

What steps can reproduce the bug?
  1. Open the redesigned ChatGPT Windows app.
  2. Open an existing ChatGPT Project.
  3. Look for an option to create a new regular ChatGPT chat directly inside that Project.
What is the expected behavior?

A New chat option should be available inside each Project so that a regular ChatGPT conversation can be created directly within that Project, as in the web app and ChatGPT Classic.

Additional information

Current workaround: create a chat outside the Project, then move it into the Project afterwards.

Research direction

Start by reproducing the issue in the redesigned Windows app: open an existing Project and inspect how new chats are created. Trace the Project chat-creation entry point and compare it with the web app and ChatGPT Classic behavior. Done means a visible New chat option creates a regular conversation directly inside the Project.
