Description
What version of the Codex App are you using (From “About Codex” dialog)?
ChatGPT Powered by Codex & OWL
Version 26.901.31953
Released September 4, 2026
What subscription do you have?
ChatGPT Plus
What platform is your computer?
Windows desktop (x64)
What issue are you seeing?
The in-app desktop updater repeatedly gets stuck at 41%. The update progress indicator appears next to the account area in the lower-left corner and remains at 41% instead of continuing or completing.
The app itself remains usable, but the update never visibly finishes and the About dialog continues to show version 26.901.31953.
There is no visible error message, retry prompt, or explanation for why the updater is stalled.
I searched the current openai/codex issue tracker and did not find an exact report for the updater being stuck specifically at 41% on this build.
What steps can reproduce the bug?
- Run the Windows ChatGPT/Codex desktop app on version
26.901.31953. - Allow/check for an available app update.
- Observe the update progress indicator near the account area.
- The progress reaches 41% and then stops.
- Repeated attempts show the same behavior; the update does not visibly complete.
- Open About ChatGPT and confirm the installed version remains
26.901.31953.
What is the expected behavior?
The updater should either:
- continue from 41% and complete the update;
- fail with an actionable error message;
- retry automatically; or
- provide a way to restart the download/update.
It should not remain indefinitely at a fixed percentage with no explanation.
Additional information
Two screenshots are available from the affected system:
- the lower-left update progress badge showing
41%; - the About dialog showing version
26.901.31953, released September 4, 2026.
If maintainers need logs or a specific updater diagnostic location, I can collect them.

Research direction
Start by locating the Windows desktop updater entry point and reproducing the update on version 26.901.31953 until progress reaches 41%. Check the updater diagnostics or logs for the stalled operation; done means the update completes, retries, or presents an actionable error instead of remaining indefinitely at 41%.
