What version of the Codex App are you using?

ChatGPT Desktop / unified ChatGPT-Codex app 26.901.31953
Released September 4, 2026
Shown in the About dialog as: ChatGPT – Powered by Codex & OWL

What subscription do you have?

ChatGPT Team

What platform is your computer?

Windows 11 x64
Display resolution: 3440 x 1440
Windows display scaling: 125%

What issue are you seeing?

In the unified ChatGPT desktop application on Windows, the message composer/input field disappears after the assistant finishes responding in regular Chat mode.

The initial composer is available normally and I can submit a message. The assistant response is rendered correctly. However, once the response has completed, the composer is completely absent from the bottom of the conversation, making it impossible to send a follow-up message in the same chat.

This is reproducible in regular Chat mode.

ChatGPT Classic on the same computer and with the same account works normally.

What steps can reproduce the bug?
  1. Launch ChatGPT Desktop 26.901.31953 on Windows.
  2. Open regular Chat mode.
  3. Start or open a conversation.
  4. Enter and send a message.
  5. Wait for the assistant response to finish.
  6. Observe the bottom of the conversation.
Actual behavior

The composer/input field disappears completely after the assistant response. There is no visible field in which to type another message.

Expected behavior

The composer should remain visible and usable after every assistant response so the conversation can continue normally.

Troubleshooting / observations
  • Windows display scaling is already 125%, not 150%.
  • Resolution is 3440 x 1440.
  • Ctrl + Shift + R has no effect.
  • Restarting/opening the application does not provide a useful permanent workaround.
  • ChatGPT Classic works correctly on the same machine.
  • The issue therefore appears specific to the new unified ChatGPT/Codex/OWL desktop client.
Related reports
  • #42776 – same app version 26.901.31953, composer-related regression after a response on macOS.
  • #42583 – composer disappears after the first message in regular Chat mode on macOS.
  • #42649 – Windows desktop composer can disappear or move outside the viewport.
  • #23024 – older Windows composer-disappearance issue related to 150% scaling; this reproduction is different because it occurs at 125% scaling.
Additional information

The issue was reproduced on September 5, 2026, immediately after installing/running build 26.901.31953.

Screenshots are available showing:

  • the missing composer after an assistant response;
  • the About dialog with exact app version 26.901.31953.

Research direction

No source file, test, or entry point is identified in the issue. Start by reproducing the missing composer in ChatGPT Desktop 26.901.31953 on Windows 11 at 125% scaling, then trace the desktop chat UI behavior after an assistant response; done means the composer remains visible and usable for follow-up messages.
