Description

What version of the Codex App are you using?

ChatGPT/Codex desktop app 26.901.22334 (macOS, Apple Silicon)

What subscription do you have?

ChatGPT Plus

What platform is your computer?

macOS, Apple Silicon

What issue are you seeing?

Cloud/Codex conversations can be archived from the sidebar, but once they are in Settings → Archived chats, there is no way to permanently delete them.

Each archived row only exposes Unarchive. There is no Delete/trash action or overflow menu.

This leaves unwanted Codex/cloud conversations permanently retained in the archived-chat UI. One example is a Codex-generated conversation titled Create project with Codex.

I also observed a related stale/ghost conversation problem: a conversation already deleted server-side can remain in the desktop Recent list and cannot be removed. Signing out and back in did not fix that state and caused the conversation list to resynchronize, so this does not appear to be a simple local-cache issue.

Steps to reproduce
  1. Open the ChatGPT/Codex desktop app on macOS.
  2. Locate a Codex/cloud conversation in the sidebar.
  3. Open its context menu and choose Archive.
  4. Confirm that it disappears from the sidebar.
  5. Open Settings → Archived chats.
  6. Locate the archived conversation.
  7. Observe that the only available action is Unarchive; there is no permanent Delete action.
Actual behavior

Archived Codex/cloud conversations cannot be permanently deleted from the desktop UI. The archived-chat screen exposes only Unarchive.

Expected behavior

Archived conversations should provide a permanent Delete action (with confirmation), consistent with normal chat-history management. If deletion is intentionally unsupported for this conversation type, the UI should clearly explain why and provide the supported removal path.

Related issues

This appears related to existing session-management reports including #39839 (archived chats page has no delete option), #28565/#28528 (archived chats cannot be deleted), and #41987/#42236 (deleted cloud chats remain as undeletable ghost entries).

Additional information

The issue is reproducible in the current desktop UI. In the archived-chat screen, affected conversations display a cloud icon and are grouped under a project; each row has only an Unarchive button.

Research direction

Start at the macOS desktop app's Settings → Archived chats screen and reproduce the missing action for a cloud conversation, then inspect the existing archive/unarchive entry point. Done means archived conversations offer a confirmed permanent Delete action, or the UI clearly explains the supported removal path; also check whether deleted ghost entries are affected.
