What issue are you seeing?
Summary

Codex Remote pairing between my Windows PC and Android phone fails immediately during QR-code pairing.

The Windows Codex app successfully generates a QR code under:

Settings > Connections > Control this PC > Phone

The ChatGPT Android app recognizes and scans the QR code, but immediately shows:

“Pairing failed”
“Something went wrong while pairing. Please scan the QR code again.”

Chinese UI:
“配对失败”
“配对时出了点问题。请重新扫描二维码。”

The Android device never becomes paired with the Windows host.

Host

Windows PC
Windows version/build: [ADD OUTPUT FROM winver]

Remote client

Xiaomi 11 Pro
Android version: [ADD ANDROID VERSION]
ChatGPT Android app: latest Google Play version available to me as of 2026-09-03
Exact ChatGPT app version: [ADD VERSION IF AVAILABLE]

Steps to reproduce
  1. Open Codex on Windows.
  2. Go to Settings > Connections.
  3. Select “Control this PC”.
  4. Select “Phone”.
  5. Generate a fresh QR code.
  6. Open ChatGPT on Android and go to Remote.
  7. Scan the QR code.
  8. Android immediately displays “Pairing failed / Something went wrong while pairing.”
Actual behavior

QR code is recognized, but pairing immediately fails.

The phone is not registered as an authorized Remote device.

Expected behavior

The Android phone should pair successfully with the Windows Codex host and appear as an authorized Remote device.

Troubleshooting already performed
  • Restarted the Windows PC.
  • Restarted the Android phone.
  • Confirmed Codex is updated to version 26.826.12353.
  • ChatGPT Android app was updated from Google Play approximately two days ago.
  • Generated fresh QR codes and retried multiple times.
  • Tested without the university eduroam network.
  • Windows PC was connected through an EE mobile-data hotspot.
  • Android phone was also using the EE mobile network.
  • The failure is therefore reproducible outside the university network.
  • The issue occurs during pairing itself, before a Remote session is established.
  • This PC/phone combination has never successfully completed Remote pairing before.
Additional information

Phone model: Xiaomi 11 Pro.

This appears related to other recent Windows + Android Remote issues, although my failure occurs earlier in the process: the Android client fails during the initial device-pairing/registration step rather than after a successful pairing.

Related issues for reference:

  • #37925 Android Remote pairing fails on two Windows PCs
  • #38031 Android Remote cannot re-pair after removing a previously connected phone
  • #39856 Windows Remote: QR pairing succeeds but Android clients cannot establish session

I can provide additional logs or diagnostics if needed.

What steps can reproduce the bug?

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open the Codex desktop app on Windows.
  2. Go to Settings > Connections > Control this PC.
  3. Select the “Phone” tab.
  4. Generate a fresh QR code.
  5. Open the ChatGPT Android app on a Xiaomi 11 Pro.
  6. Open Remote and scan the QR code.
  7. The QR code is recognized, but pairing immediately fails.
  8. Android shows:
    “Pairing failed”
“Something went wrong while pairing. Please scan the QR code again.”

Expected result:
The Android phone should be paired with the Windows Codex host and appear as an authorized Remote device.

Actual result:
Pairing fails during the initial device-registration step, before any Remote session is created.

Environment:

  • Codex Windows version: 26.826.12353
  • Android device: Xiaomi 11 Pro
  • ChatGPT Android app: updated from Google Play within the last 2 days
  • Network: reproduced using EE mobile data/hotspot, not university eduroam
  • Both Windows PC and Android phone were restarted before testing
  • Fresh QR codes were generated and retried multiple times
  • This PC/phone combination has never successfully completed Remote pairing

No code snippet is applicable because this is a GUI/device-pairing bug rather than an API/code-execution issue.

Session ID: Not available / no Remote session is successfully created.
Token limit usage: Not applicable.
Context window usage: Not applicable.

What is the expected behavior?

Research direction

Start by reproducing the flow from Windows Settings > Connections > Control this PC > Phone and scanning the QR code from Android Remote on the Xiaomi 11 Pro. Check the requested Windows, Android, and ChatGPT app version details and collect diagnostics; done means the phone completes initial registration and appears as an authorized Remote device.
