Make Codex usage limits clearer when the weekly quota is exhausted

Hi OpenAI / Codex team,

I’ve been following OpenAI since the early days, and I’d definitely consider myself a longtime user. I’ve generally had a great experience with your products, but something happened today that was really frustrating and made me think the current Codex usage-limit system could be much clearer.

My Codex usage panel showed that I still had 89% remaining in my 5-hour window, so naturally I assumed I could keep working. However, Codex suddenly stopped me and said that I was out of usage.

After checking the usage panel more carefully, I realized that my weekly quota had reached 0%.

I understand that both a 5-hour limit and a weekly limit may exist, but the current presentation feels very misleading. If the weekly quota completely prevents me from using Codex, showing 89% remaining in the 5-hour window gives the impression that I still have a large amount of usable capacity when, in reality, I cannot use any of it.

The best analogy I can think of is having no money left in one bank account while still having cash in your wallet — except the system tells you that you are not allowed to spend the cash either.

I’d really like to see the quota UI reflect the effective amount of usage that is actually available.

For example, when the weekly quota reaches 0%, Codex could:

show the 5-hour allowance as unavailable or effectively 0%;
clearly display something like “89% remaining in your 5-hour window, but unavailable because your weekly limit has been reached”;
make the limiting quota much more prominent;
or reconsider whether unused short-window capacity should become completely inaccessible once the weekly cap is reached.

I’m not asking for a manual quota reset here. This is product feedback about the design and transparency of the usage system.

In my case, I was in the middle of actual work when Codex suddenly became unavailable, even though the interface was still telling me that I had 89% remaining. That interruption delayed my work and made the experience much more frustrating than it needed to be.

I really like Codex and use it for serious development work, so I hope you’ll consider making the usage-limit system clearer and more user-friendly.

At the time this happened, the usage panel showed:

5-hour usage: 89% remaining
Weekly usage: 0% remaining
Codex status: completely unavailable

The app displayed:

“You’re out of Codex and Work usage.”

I’m attaching a screenshot showing the 89% remaining 5-hour allowance alongside the exhausted weekly quota.

My main concern is not that usage limits exist. My concern is that the UI presents a large amount of remaining usage that is not actually usable, which can cause users to incorrectly believe they can continue working.

No repository file or test is named. Start by reviewing the Codex App on Windows usage panel and the attached screenshot, then reproduce the state with 89% remaining in the 5-hour window and 0% weekly usage. Done means the interface clearly identifies the weekly quota as the effective limit and explains why Codex is unavailable.
