Description

What version of the Codex App are you using (From “About ChatGPT” dialog)?

ChatGPT unified desktop app 26.831.21537
Released Sep 1, 2026
Powered by Codex & OWL

What subscription do you have?

ChatGPT Pro

What platform is your computer?

macOS, Apple Silicon (arm64)

What issue are you seeing?

I am unable to archive any Codex conversation in the current ChatGPT/Codex desktop app. Every archive attempt displays:

Failed to archive conversation

This is not limited to conversations inside a Project. I reproduced the same failure with conversations outside Projects as well.

Troubleshooting already completed
  • Fully restarted the desktop app.
  • Signed out and signed back in.
  • Downloaded and reinstalled the latest desktop app.
  • Confirmed the installed version is 26.831.21537 (released Sep 1, 2026).
  • Tested multiple conversations.
  • Tested conversations inside Projects.
  • Tested conversations outside Projects.
  • The error persists in every case.

I have not modified or deleted local Codex project data, ~/.codex, SQLite databases, or session files.

What steps can reproduce the bug?
  1. Open ChatGPT Desktop on macOS.
  2. Switch to Codex.
  3. Select any existing Codex conversation, either inside or outside a Project.
  4. Open the conversation menu and choose Archive.
  5. The app displays “Failed to archive conversation” and the conversation remains visible.
  6. Repeat with other conversations; the same failure occurs.
What is the expected behavior?

Selecting Archive should successfully archive the Codex conversation and remove it from the active conversation list.

Additional information

The issue remains after a fresh reinstall and reauthentication, and it affects all Codex conversations tested rather than a single stale/orphaned thread.

There are other recent archive-related reports, but this case appears broader because every Codex conversation tested fails to archive on macOS with version 26.831.21537.

A screenshot showing the Failed to archive conversation toast and a screenshot of the About dialog confirming version 26.831.21537 are available if needed.

For privacy, conversation contents, project contents, account identifiers, and local file paths are intentionally omitted.

Research direction

No source file, test, or entry point is named in the report. Reproduce the failure on macOS Apple Silicon with ChatGPT Desktop 26.831.21537 across Codex conversations inside and outside Projects, then trace the archive action from the reported error. Done means archiving succeeds and removes the conversation from the active list.
