What issue are you seeing?

When forking during a tool call, the fork will panic, since a tool call will record the 'start' but not the 'result'.

This happens with /side or /btw often.

What steps can reproduce the bug?

Start /side while the main thread is awaiting a tool call result. The side snapshot contains the call without its output, and debug history normalisation panics.

What is the expected behavior?

You should be able to do /side at any point, it should snapshot before the tool call, no panic.

Additional information

A panic in a /side invocation of any kind should unwind safely back to the main thread and report an error.

Start by reproducing the panic through the /side entry point while a tool call is in progress, using the reported Codex CLI version and environment as context. Trace the fork-during-tool-call path and verify that /side completes without panicking while the tool call behavior remains intact.
