Description

What variant of Codex are you using?

Codex App on macOS

What feature would you like to see?

Please make natural language pet creation a first class flow inside Settings → Appearance → Pets.

The current app already includes “Create your own pet” and launches the Hatch Pet workflow with a general prompt based on what Codex knows about the user. That is delightful, but the place to describe the pet is not obvious from the settings screen.

Suggested flow:

  1. Open Settings → Appearance → Pets → Create.
  2. Show a text field labeled “Describe your pet.”
  3. Let the user enter a direct prompt before the creation task begins.
  4. Generate a few preview directions, then let the user choose one and refine it.
  5. Install the finished animated pet automatically and make it immediately selectable.
  6. Keep the existing custom pet folder and import path for advanced users.

Example prompt:

A friendly bright red lobster with expressive eyes, oversized claws, a confident little walk, and clear animations for working, waiting, ready, and blocked states.

Useful acceptance criteria:

  • The entire flow is available inside the macOS Codex App.
  • The user can edit the prompt before generation and refine it afterward.
  • Codex handles the sprite sheet, transparency, animation states, manifest, validation, and installation.
  • The generated pet can be previewed before replacing the current pet.
  • Failed generation shows a clear recovery action and preserves the prompt.
Additional information

Pets are one of the most charming parts of the Codex App. A visible prompt box in pet settings would make custom creation discoverable to people who do not know about pet manifests, sprite sheets, skills, or local folders.

My first pet would be a lobster.

Research direction

Start with Settings → Appearance → Pets → Create and trace the existing “Create your own pet” Hatch Pet workflow. Define the prompt, preview, refinement, installation, and recovery steps while preserving the existing custom pet folder and import path. Done means the macOS flow supports editable prompts, preview before replacement, automatic installation, and clear recovery after failure.
