Description
What version of the Codex App are you using (From “About Codex” dialog)?
ChatGPT desktop app for Windows — app reports “ChatGPT is up to date”; Computer Use plugin version 26.814.41407
What subscription do you have?
ChatGPT Pro
What platform is your computer?
Microsoft Windows NT 10.0.26200.0 x64
What issue are you seeing?
The bundled Computer Use plugin is installed and enabled, but the Computer Use operational tool is not available to the model. ChatGPT therefore cannot open or interact with Windows Notepad.
The plugin UI reports the following capabilities:
- Interactive
- Read
- Write
Settings > Computer Use > Any App is enabled. The test was also launched from the plugin's “Try now” button in Work mode with the @Computer Use plugin attached.
The plugin was completely uninstalled, the ChatGPT desktop app was closed and restarted, and Computer Use was reinstalled. The problem remained unchanged.
The MCP page shows only:
node_replcodex_apps
No Computer Use operational server or tool is shown or made available.
Three independent tests failed.
First result:
COMPUTER_USE_WRITE_TEST_BLOCKED
Error message:
Third result after the clean reinstall:
COMPUTER_USE_WRITE_TEST_R3_BLOCKED
Error message:
Computer Use non è disponibile tra gli strumenti operativi collegati; Blocco note non è stato aperto né modificato.
What steps can reproduce the bug?
- Open the ChatGPT desktop app on Windows.
- Confirm that the app reports “ChatGPT is up to date.”
- Install and enable the bundled Computer Use plugin.
- Confirm that Computer Use reports Interactive, Read, and Write capabilities.
- Open Settings > Computer Use and enable “Any App.”
- Open the Computer Use plugin and select “Try now.”
- Confirm that Work mode is selected and that @Computer Use is attached to the prompt.
- Submit the following prompt:
Apri Blocco note di Windows.
Scrivi esattamente:
FAI_COMPUTER_USE_TEST_180826_R3
Non salvare il file.
Non chiudere Blocco note.
Non aprire altre applicazioni.
Dopo aver scritto il testo, fermati e restituisci esclusivamente:
COMPUTER_USE_WRITE_TEST_R3_READY
- ChatGPT does not open or modify Notepad and instead reports:
COMPUTER_USE_WRITE_TEST_R3_BLOCKED
Motivazione: Computer Use non è disponibile tra gli strumenti operativi collegati; Blocco note non è stato aperto né modificato.
- Completely uninstall the Computer Use plugin.
- Fully close and restart the ChatGPT desktop app.
- Reinstall Computer Use, enable it again, and repeat the test.
The same failure occurs.
No code snippet is applicable because this is an end-user desktop application and bundled-plugin integration issue.
Session attachment was requested through the in-app feedback dialog, but the returned feedback identifiers all report no-active-thread.
Token-limit and context-window usage are not shown and do not appear applicable to this short reproduction.
What is the expected behavior?
When the bundled Computer Use plugin is installed, enabled, authorized for “Any App,” and explicitly attached in Work mode, ChatGPT should make the Computer Use operational tool available.
For the supplied test prompt, ChatGPT should:
- Open Windows Notepad.
- Type exactly
FAI_COMPUTER_USE_TEST_180826_R3. - Leave the file unsaved and Notepad open.
- Return
COMPUTER_USE_WRITE_TEST_R3_READY.
If an additional permission or account entitlement is required, the app should show a clear permission or availability message instead of displaying the plugin as fully installed and enabled while withholding the operational tool.
Additional information
Environment:
- Account subscription: ChatGPT Pro
- Account location: Italy
- Operating system: Windows x64
- ChatGPT desktop app: reports “ChatGPT is up to date”
- Computer Use plugin version:
26.814.41407 - Computer Use permissions: Interactive, Read, Write
- Settings > Computer Use > Any App: enabled
Chrome control works correctly in the same ChatGPT desktop app and account. Independent Chrome read and write tests passed, including a write test with Chrome DevTools Protocol access disabled. This indicates that the desktop app and plugin framework are otherwise operational.
A separate feedback-session association problem is also reproducible. Feedback was submitted from inside the actual “Scrittura Blocco note” test chat with “Include current ChatGPT session logs” selected. The final attempt excluded browser tabs and browser logs for privacy. Nevertheless, every feedback identifier was returned as no-active-thread.
Feedback IDs:
no-active-thread-01a014e2-3619-7a53-9a8b-b4ad3317a0acno-active-thread-01a014e5-3dc5-7ea0-addf-50d7086f4ee6no-active-thread-01a014e9-ff82-78a3-b5bf-a6e5b2a6261a
Please verify:
- Whether Computer Use is correctly entitled and provisioned for this Pro account on Windows.
- Whether the bundled Computer Use operational component is being registered correctly.
- Why in-app feedback cannot associate the active ChatGPT session even when session-log sharing is explicitly selected.

Research direction
Start by reproducing the failure through Settings > Computer Use with “Any App” enabled, then use the plugin’s “Try now” flow in Work mode with @Computer Use attached. Check whether the operational tool is registered and available, whether the Pro account is entitled on Windows, and why in-app feedback returns no-active-thread; done means the tool is available or the app reports a clear availability reason, with feedback associated to the active session.
