Description

What version of the Codex App are you using (From “About Codex” dialog)?

26.810.50856

What subscription do you have?

ChatGPT Plus

What platform is your computer?

Darwin 24.0.0 arm64 arm

What issue are you seeing?

After updating to version 26.810.50856, Codex started consuming unusually high memory and CPU on my MacBook Air M1 (16 GB). The codex process can exceed 100% CPU, memory usage keeps increasing, tasks get stuck indefinitely on "Thinking/Working", and eventually ChatGPT becomes "Not Responding". This did not happen before the update. Multiple Codex Renderer and Service processes are also running, and system swap usage increases significantly.

What steps can reproduce the bug?
  1. Update ChatGPT/Codex to version 26.810.50856.
  2. Open Codex on a MacBook Air M1 (16 GB RAM).
  3. Open any project and start a normal coding task.
  4. After Codex starts Working/Thinking, it sometimes gets stuck indefinitely.
  5. Open Activity Monitor.
  6. The codex process can exceed 100% CPU and memory usage keeps increasing.
  7. Multiple Codex Renderer/Service processes remain active.
  8. Eventually ChatGPT becomes "Not Responding".

The issue also happens in newly created conversations. This behavior started immediately after updating to 26.810.50856 and did not happen before the update.

What is the expected behavior?

Codex should complete tasks normally without getting stuck on Thinking/Working, continuously increasing memory/CPU usage, or causing the ChatGPT desktop app to become unresponsive.

Research direction

Reproduce the regression by opening Codex on a MacBook Air M1 with version 26.810.50856 and starting a normal coding task. Monitor the codex, Codex Renderer, and Service processes in Activity Monitor as the task remains on Thinking/Working. Done means tasks complete normally without continuously increasing CPU or memory usage or making the ChatGPT desktop app unresponsive.
