Description

I want to be able to build my project binaries in bytecode for development but in native mode for production. Profiles are a way to do this. Something like this would be great:

(env
 (dev (mode byte))
 (release (mode native)))

Since it is not supported, I will also be interested in a workaround I can use to implement this.

Research direction

The issue names profiles and bytecode/native compilation modes but no files, tests, or entry points. Start by locating profile configuration and existing mode handling; clarify the intended syntax and workaround before defining implementation and tests.
