Expected Behavior
When obs docks/windows are visible on second monitor, vrr/gsync in games should work.
Current Behavior
When obs docks/windows are visible on second monitor, vrr/gsync in games without exclusive fullscreen mode is not working. (Riva Tuner OSD vrr info, also monitor LG OLED C2 vrr info OSD)
Steps to Reproduce
- Get a game without exclusive fullscreen mode. To check if game has this mode or not, enable fullscreen in game options. Then alt+tab to another window and alt + tab back. If a game has exclusive fullscreen mode, alt + tab produces a black screen for a seconds.
If a game has no exclusive fullscreen mode, alt + tab switches immediately to other window without black screen for a second. - Open obs and move obs window or an obs dock to second monitor.
- Enable framerate limiter in RivaTunter, Nvidia profile inspector or display driver settings, i.e. 115 fps
- Get monitor real time refreshrate in Riva Tuner OSD or monitor OSD.
- Start a game that has no exclusive fullscreen
- Go to a heavy demanding scene
- Watch the refresh rate, it should match the monitors refresh rate 120, or 144 or 165, depending on your monitor...
- Switch to second monitor and MINIMIZE obs window/docks
- Watch the refresh rate, now vrr/gsyn should work. Eiter the refresh rate would change many times at second in a demanding scene or be at your fps limit i.e. 115 fps in menus.
- Switch to second monitor and unhide the minimized obs window/dock.
- Watch the refresh rate, it should again match the monitors refresh rate 120, or 144 or 165, depending on your monitor. Because when obs window/docks are visible, they deactivate vrr/gsync.
In addition, repeat everything, but get in step 5 a game with exclusive fullscreen mode. The frame rate should then always change many times per second in demanding scenes or be at your fps limit i.e. 114 fps in menus. So vrr/gsync alwys work, in exclusive fullscreen obs window/docks doesn't interfere.
Anything else we should know?
In games with fullscreen option enabled, but not having real "exclusive fullscreen mode", I have no vrr/gsync when obs windows like i.e. chat are visible on second monitor. While vrr/gsync is working when obs windows are minimized.
To check vrr/gsync:
I have 120 Hz monitor, fps capped at 110 fps.
There is an refresh rate indicator in riva tuner OSD and also in the monitor itself (LG OLED C2). When a game can't hold the 110fps, the fps goes down and jumping from i.E. 90 till 110 many times per second. The refresh rate indicator is showing, that the refresh rate is jumping too, so vrr/gsync is working.
If refresh rate stays on 120 Hz, it is not working.
Not working it is in Minecrft Bedrock, Bridge Constructor Portal, Fall Guys, Phasmophobia, Little Kitty Big City.
While in other games like Turok Dinosaur Hunter Remaster, Witch It, Portal 2 or L4D2 vrr/gsyn is working!
I have two monitors, OBS main window on main monitor. I hide the obs main window in tray before gaming.
On the second mini 5 inch monitor, I have the Twitch chat dock, the audio mixer dock and the scenes dock. When these docks are NOT minimized, in the above games first list I have no vrr/gsync working. If I minimize the docks, so nothing from obs is seen, then suddenly vrr/gsyn works!
What is the differency with the games in list one and two? I found it out. Every game are set to fullscreen. But the first list has no real "exclusive fullscreen", while the second list has. So obs stops vrr/gsync to work, IF obs window is seen and not minimized + the game has no exclusive fullscreen.
To detect if a game has exclusive fullscreen or not, is easy: Alt + Tab while in game: If you switch directly to other window or from other window back to game, there is no exclusive fullscreen. But if you have one or two seconds black screen during switching, the game is working in exclusive fullscreen mode.
Is there a solution to have working vrr/gsync with these games while obs windows are seeing?
Disabling vrr at all is not the solution, gaming without vrr is a huge downstep, like going from OLED back to IPS or VA monitors. I also had never problems with my recordings and streamings with vrr and obs in games where vrr does work like the ones in the second game list above.
Would like to have vrr also in the other games, in all games.

Research direction
Start with the linked OBS log and the Windows 10 reproduction steps using OBS 30.1.2, comparing visible and minimized docks and exclusive versus non-exclusive fullscreen games. Confirm the VRR/G-Sync behavior across the listed game examples and determine whether the difference identifies an OBS-side issue; completion requires a reproducible diagnosis or documented resolution.
