Expected Behavior
The audio output of the VLC Video Source should match the timing of the monitor output of the same source.
Current Behavior
The audio output of the VLC video source is delayed by nearly 3 seconds when compared to the monitor output of the same source.
Steps to Reproduce
- Open OBS and create a new scene.
- Add a VLC Video Source to the scene. Select any music file as the source.
- In the advanced settings for the audio mixer, set the VLC source to monitor and output.
- Play the music file if it is not already playing.
- With the default settings, the monitor and output destinations should be the same. Record a clip. You should hear the music play twice, but with some delay between them.
- Alternatively, set the monitor output to a different output so that it is not recorded to the file. For example, I set it to outputs 3/4 of my audio interface so that I can hear it but it will not be recorded.
- Make sure there is a microphone connected and set to output. Record a clip, humming along to the music as heard in the monitor output.
- Listen back to the recorded file. You should find that the music is substantially delayed from the humming.
Anything else we should know?
I have tried this with and without HAGS enabled and with no other sources except the VLC source, but the problem persists. I also tried the same music file but with a standard media source and there was no delay issue. As far as I can tell, this is specifically tied to the VLC Video Source. This is a problem because I use this for background music and would like to have a ducker set up on the music, but because the output is delayed, the ducking occurs substantially later, which completely defeats the purpose of ducking in the first place. Just to be extra clear, the delay happens only on the actual output, not on the monitor output, and only with the VLC Video Source. The music files are stored locally on my machine. If a recorded clip would be helpful, I can provide that.

Research direction
Start by reproducing the delay with a VLC Video Source on Windows 11 using the listed recording and monitoring steps, then review the linked OBS log. Compare VLC Video Source monitoring and recorded output against a standard media source; done means both paths remain synchronized and the ducking use case no longer has a substantial delay.
