Description

Something like this:

function lineLabel(data, options = {}) {
  const {
    x,
    y,
    z,
    dx = 4,
    frameAnchor = "left",
    stroke,
    text = stroke !== undefined ? stroke : z,
    ...rest
  } = options;
  return Plot.marks(
    Plot.line(data, options),
    Plot.text(data, Plot.selectLast({x, y, z, fill: stroke, text, dx, frameAnchor, ...rest}))
  );
}

Then you’d say:

Screen Shot 2022-04-29 at 9 52 33 AM
Plot.plot({
  style: {
    overflow: "visible"
  },
  y: {
    zero: true
  },
  marks: [
    Plot.lineLabel(industries, {x: "date", y: "unemployed", stroke: "industry"})
  ]
})

Research direction

Start by reviewing the proposed JavaScript implementation and comparing the behavior of Plot.line, Plot.text, and Plot.selectLast. Clarify the intended lineLabel API and verify the example rendering; done means the convenience mark and shown labeled-line usage are accepted and work as described.
