Description

It is a problem that the term skeletal musculature (UBERON:0018254) is not under musculoskeletal system (UBERON:0002204) in the ontology. Issue #2688 was addressing that but it went stale three years ago and at this point it appears that there are no muscle terms under musculoskeletal system. Please consider at least putting skeletal musculature under musculoskeletal system in the hierarchy. RGD uses UBERON for annotating and categorizing the tissues used in expression experiments and it makes no sense for the musculoskeletal system category to not include any muscle-derived data, and for users to have to look at mesenchyme to find that data.

Research direction

Start by reviewing issue #2688 and the current UBERON hierarchy around UBERON:0018254 (skeletal musculature) and UBERON:0002204 (musculoskeletal system). Confirm whether the requested parent relationship fits the ontology, then update the hierarchy so skeletal musculature is included under musculoskeletal system and verify that the relevant RGD categorization use case is addressed.
