The Human placenta in Uberon

The current representation of placenta in Uberon, does not reflect the human anatomy. The following edits have been proposed/requested to make the placenta Human aligned. The major points are:

• Placental arteries: Add new vascular terms under placental artery UBERON:8480007 and placental vein UBERON:8480008
  

  • Villous capillary as a child term of placenta blood vessel, instead of placental artery.

• Placental membrane: The term “placental membrane” in Uberon is not used in the way it is typically used in clinical pathology and obstetrics.

  • Proposal to utilize “placental membrane” in the “structural”/histopathologic term. Then “fetal membrane” should stay where it is (“fetal membrane” should still be made a synonym).

• Amnion and chorion: “Amnion” and “Chorion” are not related to the “fetal membrane” or “placental membrane”

  • It appears that amnion is being used for an earlier developmental stage (prior to development of the placenta proper). In this case, should introduce a new term: “amniotic membrane”
  • It appears that chorion membrane is being used as a more general term. In this case, would suggest:
    • Change “chorion membrane” to “chorion”
    • Introduce a new term: “chorionic membrane”
      

• Chorionic plate: We propose to move “chorionic plate” to be directly a “part-of” the placenta, and organize chorionic villus under it. The terms primary, secondary, and tertiary villus are used in a developmental sense. For the established placenta, would be better to use the terms primary, secondary, and tertiary stem villus.
