Start at the nvim-tree setup entry point and the nvim-web-devicons setup call shown in the reproduction, then read the behavior described in issues 462 and 464. Verify whether the user-provided overrides survive nvim-tree initialization; done means the configured icons are still returned instead of the defaults.
