Description
Some commands which operate on strings could also operate on ByteStream values which are ByteStreamType::String as well. We don't need to coerce into a string for all operations. Additionally, not all of these commands need to have streamed output; for example, str stats has collected output but also needlessly collects its input.

Research direction
Start by locating the string manipulation commands and their handling of ByteStreamType::String, then inspect str stats as the concrete example in the issue. Done means applicable commands accept ByteStream string values without unnecessary coercion, and commands such as str stats do not needlessly collect their input.
