Description

During a heuristic usability evaluation of Notepad++, I noticed that some toolbar icons are difficult for beginner users to recognize without relying on tooltips.

For example, several editing and navigation icons are not immediately self-explanatory when first using the application. Experienced users may already understand them, but newer users may need to hover over icons repeatedly to identify their function.

This may be improved by:

adding clearer descriptions in documentation,
improving onboarding/help guidance,
or considering more recognizable icon designs in the future.

I wanted to report this as a usability observation from beginner-focused testing.

Research direction

No file, test, or entry point is identified. Start by reviewing the toolbar icons and the beginner-usability observation, then clarify whether the work is documentation, onboarding guidance, or icon redesign. Done should be defined by an agreed scope and a way to verify that beginners can recognize the affected actions.
