Once they do exist, they are currently not recreated if a reference is modified.

Research direction
Start by tracing the mapping path that creates indices and how it determines whether an existing index is current. Done means a modified reference causes its indices to be recreated before mapping, while unchanged references continue to reuse existing indices.
