Description
Description of feature
At the moment the pipeline requires to merge multiple lanes before running the pipeline. It would be a nice new feature to let the pipeline handle samples split over multiple lanes provided with the sample sheet.

Research direction
Review the pipeline's current requirement to merge lanes before execution and how samples are represented in the provided sample sheet. Check the linked pull request 821 for the implemented direction, then verify that a sample split across multiple lanes can be supplied without pre-merging and that existing single-lane behavior remains intact.
