Steps to reproduce

  1. Restart the server/computer on which Nextcloud is setup.
  2. Shared files stored in the /Talk folder of some users are now showing up directly in there home.
Expected behaviour

Restarting a computer / a server, thus restarting PHP (nextcloud) should not create such a mess. Files shared in and by default stored in the /Talk folder should remain in the /Talk folder.

Actual behaviour

Sometimes (not systematically), for some users (so far only 1 user on our instance), after restarting the server, some of the files shared by other users with this user, through the Talk app, and normally stored in /Talk are now showing up directly in the home of the user.

I found at least one occurrence of a very similar behavior on the Help Nextcloud forum here, only difference is that the user describes the problem to appear following an upgrade (which is not our case here, in our case we reproduce the issue following a computer restart): https://help.nextcloud.com/t/talk-shares-shows-in-home-directory/153219

Moreover, and maybe not related, on the admin side, Talk parameters are not available anymore, and showing up this Error message:

This message is associated in the logs to this message:

Erreur | index | Exception Call to undefined function OCA\Talk\escapeshellcmd() in file '/var/www/nextcloud/apps/spreed/lib/MatterbridgeManager.php' line 932
-- | -- | --

EDIT 1 - Regarding the error Call to undefined function OCA\Talk\escapeshellcmd() in file '/var/www/nextcloud/apps/spreed/lib/MatterbridgeManager.php' line 932
The app Talk matterbridge wasn't activated anymore. I simply removed it completely and it solved the problem regarding unavailable access to Talk parameters on the admin side.
Moreover, it is now clear to me that this error related to Talk Matterbridge app was completely unrelated from the issue I reported here.

EDIT 2 - Regarding the reproducibility of the bug
We tried today to reproduce the bug described here by doing different combinations of sequential restarts of PHP, MariaDB, and Nginx. We did each combinations twice. Doing so, none of the restarts combination we tested reproduced the bug. We also tried to restart the machine several time, without reproducing the bug.
This underlines the fact that this issue is not systematically reproducible, and may be difficult to traceback.

EDIT 3 - Regarding the investigation of the bug in nextcloud database
In the table oc_preferences, we actually found a single entry attachment_folder for only 1 nextcloud user. None of the other users had an entry with attachment_folder associated to their userid. Interestingly, this single user is the only one having the bug we report here.
That does not answer the origin of the bug. But my guess now is that removing this entry from the table oc_preferences may solve the problem for good. See capture attached below:

Research direction

The report points to the Talk app and the oc_preferences table, where attachment_folder exists for the affected user. Start by investigating how Talk shared files are restored after a server restart and compare the stored folder with the resulting home-directory placement. MatterbridgeManager.php line 932 is explicitly identified as unrelated; done means reproducing and preventing the misplaced files.
