Description

Can we switch here to a parallel compression technique? Maybe something like pigz could be used as an optional drop-in replacement of gzip if it is present. The current solution takes really long in compression and leaves my core-count unused.

Research direction

Start by locating the pack compression implementation and how it currently invokes gzip. Investigate whether pigz can be detected and used as an optional replacement while retaining the existing fallback. Done means compression can use available parallelism without breaking environments where pigz is absent.
