App freezes on startup when many uploads are queued

Description
When I start the Nextcloud app on my Samsumg phone, the blue screen with the logo shows up, nearly instantaneously.
This screen stays there for long time, nothing else will happen for many minutes.
I never managed to move to the next screen, the one with the top level folder view.
After a while, an Android overlay window "Nextcloud reagiert nicht" ("Nextcloud is not responding") appears.
I can select "Close app", "Wait", "Send feedback", but neither option helps really using the app.
If I select "Wait", the overlay closes, the blue app startup screen remains, and after a short while the overlay re-appears.
I can repeat this for 20-30 times, without the app becoming usable.
