Research direction

The issue identifies the 2.0.x and 3.0.x release tags, including 2.0.7 and 3.0.7, but names no source files or tests. Start by inspecting the repository's tag and release history and comparing the affected tags with their intended 2.x commits. Done means the affected 2.x tags consistently point to 2.x code rather than 3.x commits.
