Description
Your idea
In order to preserve vertical space, I propose to implement a note position in which very wide intervals will automatically take a beam centered between the stems, which will avoid long stems:
Problem to be solved
This will allow you to save vertical space, which in some cases is very much in demand.

Research direction
Use the attached image and issue description as the behavioral reference for beams spanning very wide intervals with opposite stem directions. First inspect the existing beam-positioning behavior and determine how such intervals are currently rendered. Done means the centered-beam position preserves vertical space while matching the proposed notation.
