Description
Expected behavior of the wanted feature
The option should control either line-height (in percents) of a subtitle line, or spacing between subtitle lines (accepting negative values).
Excuse me if this feature is already there, but I was unable to find it, looked through all subtitle options in man file and all matches of "vertical", "space" and "height". There is an option for SSA/ASS subtitles, but none for regular ones.

Research direction
The issue names no files or tests. Start by comparing regular subtitle options with the existing SSA/ASS subtitle spacing option; done means a documented option controls line-height or inter-line spacing, including negative spacing if supported.
