Research direction
Reproduce the issue by launching mpv.exe with an empty mpv.conf containing vo=direct3d and no video file. Compare vo-direct3d-bug.txt with vo-not-set-to-direct3d.txt while examining the osc, osd, and logo behavior in idle mode. Done means these elements render on startup with direct3d, as they do after loading a video.
