Description

Protocol is no longer used on websites which need to support older operating systems (and their pre-installed browsers) to download Firefox. So, we can update the browser support matrix to be a little more modern!

Our "enhanced support" targets remain the same:

Evergreen browsers:

  • Firefox
  • Chrome
  • Edge
  • Brave
  • Opera

And:

  • Firefox ESR
  • Safari 15.6

This more or less amounts to dropping browsers that were previously in our "degraded support" list down to "basic support".

The following browsers should now only be supported with a very basic universal CSS style sheet, and a basic no-JS experience.

  • Internet Explorer 11
  • Internet Explorer 10
  • Firefox 115 ESR
  • Chrome 116
  • Chrome 109
  • Safari 12.1

Research direction

Start by locating the browser support matrix and reading its current enhanced, degraded, and basic-support entries. Update the categories to match the browser lists in the issue, then check any related documentation or validation that references the matrix. Done means the listed evergreen browsers, Firefox ESR, Safari 15.6, and basic-support browsers are accurately represented.
