Description
When there is a error in in the executable (e.g., return code <> 0) the execution correctly fails but it displays a long stack trace of the plugin. It makes a mess of my log output and is making it difficult for my users to understand the log output. I couldn't find a way to disable this stack trace that shouldn't be displayed since it is the correct behavior of the plugin.
Here is a simple example of a pom that gives me an error executing unix false executable:
<project xmlns="http://maven.apache.org/POM/4.0.0"
xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:schemaLocation="http://maven.apache.org/POM/4.0.0 http://maven.apache.org/xsd/maven-4.0.0.xsd">
<modelVersion>4.0.0</modelVersion>
<groupId>br.com.comp</groupId>
<artifactId>Bdm</artifactId>
<version>1.0</version>
<description>Validating</description>
<build>
<plugins>
<plugin>
<groupId>org.codehaus.mojo</groupId>
<artifactId>exec-maven-plugin</artifactId>
<version>1.6.0</version>
<executions>
<execution>
<id>Validate</id>
<phase>compile</phase>
<goals>
<goal>exec</goal>
</goals>
</execution>
</executions>
<configuration>
<executable>false</executable>
<includeProjectDependencies>false</includeProjectDependencies>
<includePluginDependencies>false</includePluginDependencies>
</configuration>
</plugin>
</plugins>
</build>
</project>
And here is the output:
$ mvn compile

I'd like to have this output but without the stack trace.

Research direction
Start by tracing the failure path through ExecMojo.executeCommandLine in the stack trace and reproduce it with the provided Maven configuration using the false executable. Review the existing error handling and determine how the command failure is reported. Done means mvn compile still fails with the useful error and exit value while omitting the plugin stack trace.
