How does scope "swarm" differ to scope "global"

Hello,
I am working on setting up a docker network and found myself a bit confused.
When I create networks not in a swarm, I get the "global" scope, whilst those in a swarm get the "swarm" scope.
How do the two different scopes differ?
Is there a way to access global scope networks from a swarm?
Can I access swarm scope networks from outside the swarm?
Any help is very much appreciated.
