Description
We should figure out a maximum line length that we'd like to adhere to and standardize that in the repo. Ideally this would utilize tooling to refactor the code appropriately, but it may just have to involve manual changes.
We should also document this in the contributing section.

Research direction
Review the repository's existing formatting configuration and contributing documentation first; no specific files or tests are named in the issue. Done means a maximum line length is chosen, applied consistently across the repository, enforced with tooling where appropriate, and documented in the contributing guidance.
