agents: New Chat lags then hangs

Steps to Reproduce:

1. Start agents app in a way that an existing session is visible.
2. Click New or press Ctrl-N or click + in a session group.
3. Start to choose the workspace, or start typing a prompt.

Expected: the interface is responsive and responds when I press Enter at the end of the prompt.
Actual: the interface is laggy for a second and then stops responding entirely. After a timeout, I get the "continue waiting?" dialogue two times, then the window crashes and I get the option to reopen it.

I think I have some poisonous repo in my history that's causing the hang, but I don't know how to debug this to find out.
