'esc' only closes the modal when focus is in the editor

Description
- Open the modal editor window
- Press escape
- Sometimes it closes the modal, sometimes not
I think it relies on focus being inside the text editor. If I just clicked in the sidebar to open a new file, it doesn't work. Very frustrating and un-ergonomic that I have to go click the x button
