Description

  • VSCode Version: 1.52.0-insiders
  • Local OS Version: Windows 10.0.20262.0 (current Dev Channel) ARM64 (on Surface Pro X)
  • Remote OS Version: `Ubuntu 20.04 LTS) ARM64 (on Surface Pro X)
  • Remote Extension/Connection Type: WSL

I've practically given up using WSL on my Surface Pro X as I seem to constantly get disconnected from the "remote" and sometimes it will reconnect, but most often it won't and requires a manual termination of WSL before things will work again. I don't know if this is VS Code specific, because often when it happens, I can't even open a terminal to WSL.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Connect to WSL (Ubuntu), work for a while (unknown/variable to how long it takes)
  2. Get disconnect dialog, but reconnect won't work, even a window reload won't work
  3. Try to open a WSL terminal, sometimes it works, and sometimes it just hangs
  4. Terminate WSL manually, and then connecting to the remote will work again

Research direction

Start by reproducing the numbered WSL connection sequence on the listed ARM64 Surface Pro X environment, noting when disconnects, reconnects, or terminal launch hangs occur. Done means the WSL remote connection remains usable without manual WSL termination; the issue provides no file or test entry point, so the code location must be found first.
