Description

Type: Bug

Macbook Pro with Apple M4 Max
MacOS Version 15.6
VS Code Insiders 1.108.0
Remote SSH Extension Version 0.122.2025111815

I am using the Remote SSH feature to access a high performance computing cluster that requires me to validate using Microsoft Device Authorization. When I SSH from a terminal, I get a code that I then have to enter into this website (https://login.microsoftonline.com/common/oauth2/deviceauth) to authenticate, which is usually easy since I can copy the code to clipboard. However, on VS Code, the prompt does not show up in terminal but instead in a bar at the top (similar to how it does for DUO authentication). In that case, the code cannot be copied since the prompt is phantom text. I read online that I should activate the "Show Login Terminal" setting, however I have found that this made no difference at all and the prompt still appears at the top in a bar.

I should note that I have NOT had this issue on my Windows PC with regular VS Code. I am not sure if the issue is related to the MacOS or to the Insiders version (I suspect it is related to MacOS).

Research direction

Use the Remote SSH connection and the “Show Login Terminal” setting as the entry points, then reproduce Microsoft Device Authorization on macOS. Done means the authorization code appears in a copyable terminal prompt rather than the phantom-text bar, while preserving the reported behavior for regular VS Code on Windows.
