Description

Type: Bug

# Issue Summary

When connected to a Fabric Data Warehouse or Fabric SQL Analytics Endpoint, expanding the External File Formats node under External Resources causes an exception. The UI displays the message:

“Error Loading. Refresh to try again”

Refreshing does not resolve the issue, and the error occurs consistently.

# Steps to Reproduce

Open VS Code.

Connect to a Microsoft Fabric Data Warehouse or Fabric SQL Analytics Endpoint using Entra ID authentication.

In the SQL Server explorer:

Expand the database

Expand External Resources

Expand External File Formats

Observe the error message.

# Expected Result

One of the following:

The External File Formats node is hidden or disabled for Fabric endpoints where the feature is unsupported, or

The node expands successfully but shows no objects

# Actual Result

Expanding External File Formats throws an exception.

The UI displays:
“Error Loading. Refresh to try again”

Refreshing does not resolve the issue.

No actionable or descriptive error message is provided.

Research direction

Start by reproducing the issue in the SQL Server explorer with a Fabric Data Warehouse or Fabric SQL Analytics Endpoint using Entra ID authentication, then trace the External Resources and External File Formats loading path. Done means the unsupported node is hidden or disabled, or it expands without an exception and displays no objects; the current error should no longer appear.
