Description
Hi team 👋,
I’d like to request the addition of Tamil (தமிழ்) language support to the list of localized UI languages in Visual Studio Code.
🌍 Why Tamil?
- Tamil is a classical language spoken by over 85 million people worldwide.
- It’s widely used not just in India (
ta-IN), but also in Sri Lanka (ta-LK), Singapore, Malaysia, and large diaspora communities in Canada, Europe, the Middle East, and beyond. - Localizing VS Code into Tamil would break language barriers and empower native speakers globally to learn, code, and contribute with confidence.
🌐 Suggested Locale
- Language: Tamil (Global)
- Code:
ta(generic) orta-world(if custom locale tagging is possible) - Intent: Inclusiveness for all dialects and regions, not just Indian Tamil.
🙋 Willing to Contribute
I (and others from the Tamil tech community) am happy to:
- Contribute high-quality translations.
- Review strings for accuracy across regional contexts.
- Engage the Tamil-speaking dev community for broader coverage and feedback.
✅ Benefits
- Drives inclusivity and accessibility in programming.
- Helps regional and rural students learn coding tools in their native language.
- Encourages open-source participation from Tamil-speaking developers worldwide.
Please let us know how we can help initiate this — and whether a global ta or ta-world setup is technically feasible.
Thanks for considering this!
