Research direction

Start by reproducing the debugging I/O behavior described for GCC on Ubuntu 20.04 and comparing it with the external-console behavior on macOS in the VS Code C/C++ extension. Done means macOS debugging can use the internal console for input and output instead of requiring an external console.
