Description

I'd like to remotely debug programs that are built as part of my project (github.com/nanomsg/nng). This is a CMake driven project with several test executables. I'm a macOS user primarily, but I run Windows and Linux in VMs as development targets.

What I'd really really like is a way to remotely debug the Windows stuff. I know that remote debugging in Windows exists, but from Visual Studio it only seems too have support for GDB based debug services, at least on the macOS build of Visual Studio.

I'm a very new VS Code user (coming from Sublime Text), and have been impressed so far. Remote debug support for Windows targets from my macOS host would knock my socks off.

Research direction

Start with the GDB-based debug services mentioned in the issue and the CMake-built test executables used as development targets. Compare that path with Visual C++ remote debugging from a macOS host; done means a working, supported workflow for remotely debugging Windows targets.
