Research direction
Start by locating the handling of the cmake.buildDirectory setting and the buildKitTargetArch variant in the CMake Tools source. Reproduce the Ubuntu ARM cross-compilation configuration and determine why the architecture is reported as unknown; done means the variant resolves to aarch64 or the expected unsupported case is clearly reported.
