Research direction

Start by locating the CLI argument and configuration-loading entry points, then trace how flags such as verbose are parsed. Define how a user-global rc file is found under $HOME or %USERPROFILE%, which flags it may set, and how those defaults interact with command-line arguments; done means supported defaults work consistently on both platforms.
