Description

G1GCForwardReference grew organically and needs to be looked at to see if it could be refactored into something more extensible. One thought is to have a G1GCForwardReference interface with specific implementation for the different patterns. But this may lead to unwanted casting.

Research direction

The issue names G1GCForwardReference but provides no file, test, or entry point. Start by locating that type and tracing its pattern-specific uses, then assess the proposed interface and casting concerns; done requires a concrete, agreed approach for making it more extensible.
